Think Positive: Living With Osteoarthritis
Oct. 12 is World Arthritis Day

October 12 is World Arthritis Day, an international event focusing attention on living with a disease that affects all nations and all populations. This year the theme is Think Positive, which highlights the lifestyle choices that arthritis sufferers can make to feel better about themselves and get more from their lives. (For information about living with arthritis, go to www.WorldArthritisDay.org.)

Arthritis is a group of different diseases whose symptoms can range from and conditions, its symptoms can range from stiff joints to complete immobility and pain.

The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, the "wear and tear" type that affects more than 27 million Americans after the age of 50 as their joints begin to age.

Since 1988, the Arthritis Research Institute of America (ARIA) has been studying thousands of participants to learn more about osteoarthritis.  The not-for-profit research organization is based in Clearwater, FL, but its findings have been published worldwide and its X ray database is acknowledged as one of the most complete sources of information about the progression of osteoarthritis.

Here are some tips on how to think positive if you have osteoarthritis:

  • • Educate yourself about your condition and the role that exercise and nutrition play in how you cope.
  • • Make adjustments in your daily life, from how you open jars, to the kind of footwear you choose to the activities you take part in.
  • • Work with your doctor to follow a treatment plan that will allow you to manage your symptoms.
  • • Remind yourself of what can still do, not what you can’t do, if you have osteoarthritis.
  • • Enjoy friends, family, activities and events to keep a positive mindset, which will give you a greater ability to cope with your symptoms.

ARIA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose research has been published in prestigious medical journals such as Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Rheumatology and The American Journal of Physical Therapy. For information, to volunteer or to make a tax-deductible donation, call (727) 461-4054.
